Health Insurance

Contents

One of the challenges that many people face when they are divorced is how and where to obtain health insurance.

There are many Health Plan carriers in Colorado.  A list of the carriers provided by the State of Colorado can be found at this link

COBRA  (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) gives workers (and their family members) in organizations with 20 or more employees who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by the plan under certain circumstances.  In a divorce or legal separation situation, you can receive coverage for up to 36 months.  You can be required to pay the entire premium for coverage up to 102% of the cost of the plan.  For more general information on COBRA, click here.  For specific information related to COBRA at your place of work, speak to your employer. Colorado also provides some support to fill the gaps left by COBRA. If employers with less than 20 employers have a group plan, then spouses can receive up to 18 months coverage after divorce.  Click here for more info.

CoverColorado is a not-for-profit entity created by the Colorado Legislature to provide medical insurance for eligible Colorado residents who, because of a pre-existing medical condition, are unable to get coverage from private insurers.  It is also available to those who have applied to other insurers for coverage and are rejected or the rates are too high.  Click for for more information and application forms for CoverColorado.
