One of the challenges that many people face when they are divorced is how and where to obtain health insurance. There are many Health Plan carriers in Colorado. A list of the carriers provided by the State of Colorado can be found at this link. COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) gives workers (and their family members) in organizations with 20 or more employees who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by the plan under certain circumstances. In a divorce or legal separation situation, you can receive coverage for up to 36 months. You can be required to pay the entire premium for coverage up to 102% of the cost of the plan. Colorado also provides some support to fill the gaps left by COBRA. If employers with less than 20 employers have a group plan, then spouses can receive up to 18 months coverage after divorce. CoverColorado is a not-for-profit entity created by the Colorado Legislature to provide medical insurance for eligible Colorado residents who, because of a pre-existing medical condition, are unable to get coverage from private insurers.
